Q: how do you know which size to get

Measure your dog and go for a bigger size if in between as you can adjust it. I bought medium for my 14 kg cocker spaniel, small was too tight.

Q: Does this stop the dog from being thrown forward from the front seating area onto the floor when braking suddenly? Other seat belts have this problem.

Yes it does as long as you use the Kurgo seat belt that is included with the harness as it is a lot shorter than other seat belts and keeps the dog in place and unable to move around as much as other seat belts. It has also been crashed tested.

Q: can this be used as a front leader.

Yes it can but we found that for our dog it didn't work well, it pulled on his front legs making him hop when walking but as a car harness it is fantastic and very safe and secure

Q: New to dogs, can this be used as a regular harness when they are out for walks as well as well as on long journeys?

Yes just clip a lead onto the D ring. I have got a Pettom harness now and would highly recommend it for both car and dog walking. It is easy to put on and take off as well. Amazon sell them.
