Perfect
When we couldn't find a patio awning to suit the style of the house, we decided to make one. One "sheet" of heavy duty cotton (treated with Nikwax CottonProof also from Amazon) and three curtain poles with finials. The poles are of ramin (now treated) and each of 3 metres long, with one sawn in half and used as guy posts along with a couple of parasol ground screw fittings (also from Amazon). All great. And so looking right. But how to fit it to the beam in the picture? It's spruce and dates from a renovation completed in 1870. The blue corbel dates from the late 16th century. We'd already rejected modern awnings, so modern brackets just were not going to do. We found these meat hooks. Just a tad too small for the 35m diameter curtain poles. Exactly what we wanted. We spaced 4 of the hooks along the length of the pole, and used a wood rasp drill bit, to neatly cut grooves into the pole, at right angles to it's length. Now it slips onto the meat hooks easily and locks in place. One half rotation of the pole and it lifts right out of the hook. Perfect. Now because it's easy to put up/take down, it's only there for weekends and such, when we leave out our patio furniture to protect from light rain, or we need shade from the sun. So the hooks are usually visible, just attached to the beam. Now this beam is right by the old bread oven, so everyone thinks the hooks are just left overs from an earlier time... And that's if they notice them at all. Perfectly transparent... Because they look right. As to the quality of manufacture and finish, my view is that they are perfect. We don't paint our iron work, we clean and wax it or oil it, it just develops a nice aged look. And it's the same with these hooks. A high five to Heritage Casting. We'll definitely be looking at their other products.
