Ultramax RBC2 RBC17 Replacement Battery RBC 2 17 for APC UPS 12v 7Ah Battery

Ordered two batteries to restore life back into an APC Back-UPS 1400BI, for which the original batteries lasted 5 years from brand new. The Ultramax batteries arrived ahead of the estimated delivery date in very strong and well packaged boxes. Terminals had spade protectors and the general condition of the units looked like factory shipped, i.e. brand new without blemishes, and as expected. Great price too!A small issue with APC 1400BX battery replacement...Even after following three YouTube videos, replacing the original batteries was a wrestle somewhat and when opening up the APC 1400, a connector from the PCB was accidentally removed whilst prising the case panel open. After installing the two batteries, restoring the yellow fues and powering it from mains, the UPS did not stay online and a constant beep suggested the batteries were not being charged. I thought the batteries were dud at that point. After opening up the UPS again to remove the batteries and fuming about the being rubbish, I saw a tiny white connector of two black wires from the large transformer had unplugged from the PCB. After plugging it back in and putting the UPS back together again, I had no issues and normal operation was resumed with these two batteries. Magic!

Well, I'm two for two on these compatible replacement UPS batteries. My old UPS, an APC Back-UPS ES700VA, has served me since 2009. I bought it to keep my equally old QNAP TS-509 5-bay NAS running should a power cut occur. Like most computer equipment, and especially NAS's with terabytes of data in RAID arrays, losing power isn't something they take kindly too. The UPS I have uses a USB cable to send information regarding battery status and estimated protection time to the NAS. This is a very handy feature as it allows the NAS to do a controlled shutdown etc. Of course, all this is old hat to those reading this review. Anyway, the estimated protection time my QNAP NAS shows used to be somewhere around 12 minutes or so when the UPS was new. The load pulled by my NAS is low, perhaps less than 70 Watts when all drives are running. Anyway, a decent level of battery runtime was available from the original APC battery that came supplied with my UPS.Fast forward some 12 years and my UPS, something most people simply leave in a corner and forget about, started occasionally letting out a continuous shrill beep. I learned later that this is a sign of a dead or dying battery. I tested this by switching the mains power off at the wall plug and to my chagrin the battery couldn't even take any of the load and the NAS promptly died.Hmm... okay, so I need a new battery. My first instinct is to go to Amazon and purchase an original APC replacement. At the time of writing, Amazon had these for £34. Unfortunately, they were not in stock with no estimated delivery date. So, I searched for a third party compatible battery as an alternative. I came across a Yuasa branded battery compatible with the RBC17 model my UPS uses. Wow! it was just £18.99, so around half the price of the APC unit and so seeing the overall favourable reviews, I went ahead and purchased it.Oh dear ... Hmm... in short, a waste of time and effort. After fitting the battery, I let it fully charge to 100% according to my NAS's information and was concerned to see the estimated protection time of just 1 minute shown. OK I thought, maybe this is going to sort itself out once tested. I flipped off the power at the wall and the UPS began beeping continuously, an alarm status I discovered means the battery is close to exhaustion. Not good at all. however, I wanted to give the replacement battery the benefit of the doubt and let it charge for the specified 16 hours despite the NAS reporting the charge at 100% way before then. Before killing the mains power for a second test, I noted the estimated protection time had now doubled to an unimpressive 2 minutes! Once the power was killed the same thing happened, the UPS beeped a continuous warning and the battery was far below specs in terms of capacity.I returned the battery and hunted around for another option. The same supplier also sold another brand of compatible battery branded as Ultramax and although it had fewer reviews, it had a perfect 5.0 score. Further, my hopes were raised when the battery had terminal protectors attached that suggested a more professional product. Oddly, this battery was even cheaper than the first one.After installation with my hopes running high given I couldn't be that unlucky twice, I noted the charge was at 75% and the estimated protection time was a scant 45 seconds! When the charge was reported at 100%, this afforded exactly a 1 minute protection time, the same time as offered by the previous battery. This time I left et alone for the 16 hours and tested it. A 31 second loss of mains power resulted in the charge dropping to 67%, so that would suggest a mere 90 seconds of total battery support for my frugal NAS. Sure enough, after this test the estimated protection time lengthened to 1 minute 23 seconds while at the 67% charge level.Either I'm doing something wrong or have been very unlucky. Seeing the other reviews here, I am baffled. It might be that people are testing the battery as I did, finding it supports the load of their device(s) and assumes all is well without checking the actual duration of that battery support. For the odd short term power cuts I experience here, this battery will suffice. However, this is not what I paid for and expected. I can't be bothered to return this battery and will leave it in my UPS as a short term back stop until the APC original units are back in stock at Amazon.Just be careful folks, it's so often true that you get what you pay for.
