Thresher sharks inhabit temperate coastal waters in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. They are easily identified by their long tails, which they actually just to swat smaller fish. In doing so, they’re able to stun their prey before consuming it. Although some thresher shark species can grow to be 20 feet long, they are not a threat to humans. Because thresher sharks mature and reproduce slowly, they are especially susceptible to detrimental effects to their populations. They are fished for their fins and meat, and also end up as bycatch in fishing nets.
