How many shelf pins does each fit into, and how far apart are they? I only see one shelf pin in the pic. Can't find a pic of the backside to see pins.

They are designed for the industry standard 32mm system. Each support has two pins. From center pin to center of pin is 32mm (Approx. 1-1/4”). Pins are 5mm thick.

you simply use your hacksaw to trim down to 39.5

Depends upon the rod length and weight of what is hanging. The longer the rod and the heavier the clothing will increase the likelihood of needing screws.
