World War Z [DVD]

Fantastic film from start to finish. Good value.

OK, I cannot fathom why this has received bad reviews from critics and movie and non-movie lovers, but I finished watching WWZ fully satisfied, granted the ending was a tiny bit abrupt or came too soon (but I have experienced worse endings by acclaimed films of the kind) but I was terrorised watching this, Brad Pitt was great, sure his character wasn't the cliche John McClane-esque typical all guns blazing protaganist but I thoroughly enjoyed the toned done hero almost like Wikus in District 9...a kind of accidental hero. The effects were great, not mind blowing BUT they didn't need to be because we have had our fair share of OTT in-your-face big explosions summer blockbuster effects to last us another dozen summers and to be frank as much as I love big bombastc movies sometimes we can be too overwhelmed (take Man of Steel) and fed up with a cluster of scenes too messy and busy for the eyes to take in.The suspense and anticipation in slow quiet scenes were perfect (I'm a self confessed scaredy-cat when it comes to horror and thrills) and didn't do the usual image-run-across-the-screen usual BS we are used to, but when things jumped out it was when I was not expecting them to...and when things DIDN'T jump out it was when I was really expecting to, so my anticipation of thrills and suspense was all over the place making me enjoy the ride even more.I came in listening to the bad reviews and expected to be bitterly dissappointed (the opposite of other summer blockbusters like Iron Man 3, Man of Steel and the like) but ended up fulfilled and thoroughly entertained and will be lining up immediatly when the sequel arrives.

A science fiction horror film based loosely on the novel by Max Brooks, but altered considerably to provide a cohesive narrative storyline.It`s a fast-paced, sprawling action film with often epic set-piece scenarios that depict a potentially apocalyptic zombie pandemic. An entertaining and imaginative popcorn movie, Brad Pitt does a fair job as the lead actor though there isn`t a lot of character development given the dominance of the concept and pace of events.It`s a technically well-made film and it holds a certain status with viewers from Scotland as the opening scenes were filmed around Glasgow and in Grangemouth.The DVD release presents a good clear digital transfer in 16x9 ratio.A decent enough film of its kind.

What an absolutely fantastic movie!I remembered this coming out at the cinema but, not being a fan of the zombie genre - in fact, I loathe it, it's dull and stupid! - I didn't really take all that much notice. But it was always there, niggling at the back of my mind. So, on a whim, I decided to take a punt - it was only a fiver, so, not that much of a risk - and get it on DVD.Wow! Am I glad I did!I can't stop watching it. No blood; no gore. No ridiculously un-scary zombies shambling about at minus two miles per hour. Everything I hate about 'proper' zombie movies is gloriously absent from World War Z. And in its place we have one of the most epic, large-scale actioners I've ever seen. Never mind being TOLD by the characters that the world is overrun by the undead as they valiently battle a small contingent in a shopping mall or something, in this movie we get to SEE the world overrun.The opening Philadelphia set piece is amazing. The Jerusalem one is just plain addictive.The only minor gripe I might have is with the third act. Usually action movies crank UP towards the end. This one cranks DOWN. After the mind-blowing action of acts one and two the third act is more about tension. It's not a problem. It's just different.Seriously, don't do what I did and let the online reviews put you off.If you like gore and brain-eating, then, admittedly this probably isn't for you. But if you're more mature than that and enjoy a good story excellently told then take a chance on this one. You won't be disappointed.

I`ll start by saying that this is my favourite movie of 2013. You have 10 minutes at the beginning for the scene to be set with the introduction of Brad Pitt and his family. Then bang, society and the world they (we) know, quickly falls apart as chaos and violence takes over, with everyone desperately battling to somehow survive against the growing numbers of the undead.To say that this story moves at pace is like saying Usain Bolt can run a bit. There is one marvellous set piece after another, which are all tense and exciting at the same time. My fave scene is on the plane, when the infection starts, I didn`t know what the hell Brad Pitt`s character was going to do, but desperate times call for equally desperate measures and this sequence was resolved with a backs to the wall nowhere to go resolution that was the only logical thing to do. But I am delighted to say that it all works tremendously well.The well publicised problems during the making of the movie are not transferred to the screen and what we have are a blockbuster that delivers on every level. I was sceptical before I saw the film because of its certification and lack of on screen gore. But I was taken in by the scale of the film that successfully creates a genuinely terrifying global pandemic that threatens the survival of the human race itself.All I can say is if there is to be a sequel, they`ve got one hell of a job matching this movie.

Can't wait till number two comes out on dvd
