From Merseyside to Hamburg: Compl Star Club

What a shame that they flew under the radar.
I'm amazed that they existed, yet did not get ANY recognition. There is a great deal of good energy in their music. Maybe they were appreciated in Europe and elsewhere, but why was this band so unknown? Was it because they never toured the USA? Was there that much sexism in the music industry that they were not considered alongside the boy bands? In any event, I appreciate the music and hope they gain the recognition they deserve.

Female rock groups existed way back in the day!
Nothing to dislike - love the group and the story behind them - they were from Liverpool and we’re playing before the Beatles became known - they played in Hamburg, Germany before the Beatles did...just another reminder that there were women out there doing their thing, just like the guys. Just because we don’t hear about them doesn’t mean they didn’t exist!

Not only for the birds...
A very enjoyable listen. This was from a period of tremendous musical exploration, primarily due to The Beatles. But who new this group existed? They were good! A fun cd to own.

John Lennon got it wrong!!
Girls with guitars worked for me. Raw, enthusiastic, good time stuff. How music should be. Amazed that this is not more well known. If you are in to serious music of the best decade of all this has to be in your collection. They didnt call them the female beatles for nothing and the star club was qiuck to spot the potential of english beat groups back then.

Interesting.
A lot of good music from an early all female English band, who became famous in Germany.

Liverbirds - 'From Mercybeat To Hamburg: Complete Star Club' (Big Beat)
Not exactly sure as to how many release(s) this '60's all-female British Invasion / Merseybeat band has put out. This twenty-nine collection looks to be their lengthiest title, clocking in at 79:50. Couldn't help but to notice that The Liverbirds played quite a few covers - but still good music - regardless. Loved the Chuck Berry compositions such as "Talking About You", the always rocking "Johnny B. Goode", "Too Much Monkey Business" and the real toe-tapper "Around And Around". Also dug their takes on a couple of Motown classics "Shop Around" and "Heatwave". Some of the gems on this disc that I simply don't recognize include "Leave All Your Old Loves In The Past", the catchy "It's Got To Be You" and "He Hardly Ever Calls Me Anymore". Line-up: Pamela Birch (R.I.P.) - guitar & vocals, Mary McGlory - bass & vocals, Valerie Gell - guitar & vocals, Irene Green - vocals and Sylvia Saunders - drums. Recommended for fans of the Dave Clark Five, Roy Orbison, the Easybeats, the Searchers, Yardbirds and Suzi Quatro.

The Liverbirds From merseyside to Hamburg.
Very nice Merseybeat Music by an all girls Merseybeat band from Liverpool. They did lots of covers, which was the thing to do at the time. They are more than proficient musicians and the cd is fun to listen to. The CD contains 29 tracks which are lots of fun to listen to. This cd is definetly worth purchasing, if you are a fan of BritishBeat music or just a lover of 60s Rock and Roll.

A good view of a working band in Hamburg circa 1964
The Liverbirds were a girl group from Liverpool who achieved far more success in Europe - and the quintessential proving ground of Hamburg in particular - than they ever had in the native England. In fact, the band never had a record issued in the UK. They did, however, two LPs and four 45s in Germany on the Star Club Records label, an imprint of the Philips organization. And yes, it's the same folks that ran the club of the same name on the Grosse Freiheit and took the opportunity to leverage some more revenue from their acts while also giving the performers a record deal. After all, not every band that played Liverpool were the recipients of a record deal with Parlophone...if you get my drift. The girls - and I use the term within the context of those guys with the Parlophone contract being called "the boys;" in point of fact, The Liverbirds were advertise as Die Weblichen Beatles or female Beatles - got to Hamburg after a few personnel changes and being enlisted out of The Cavern Club by Star Club talent scouts. The CD on that most wonderful oldies label Ace/Big Beat presents their full recorded output, which sounds surprisingly - remarkably - good in terms of technical quality. There are few, if any, scratches or clicks, so I'm assuming master tapes were used; the vocal/instrument balance is perfect. The first LP and the 45s are prototypical English R&B, heavy on US acts like Chuck Berry but also including a lot of Bo Diddley. The second LP is more Brill Building/Girl group. There are also a few original pieces. What comes across is that the group was highly competent, though perhaps a touch uninspired in their performances. OK, I'll stipulate I have no idea what they sounded like on stage. It's possible they were much more raucous (i.e. good) outside the studio. One finds that to be the case with a lot of the mid and low level British Invasion bands who seemed - when on stage - to simply explode with the joy found in playing in front of a crowd. This also leads me to another comment. The track listings indicate the LPs were released in 1965 and 1966. The material, on the other hand, seems much more like 1963/1964. Why was the label releasing this sort of stuff at a time when music had moved sharply in another direction? At the same time, I have wonder if this is what The Liverbirds' set lists were like. The Liverbirds fall into this category and a good grouping it is. If you like this sort of music, it's a worthwhile addition to your collection.

GIRLS DO PLAY GUITARS!
The Liverbirds are the most underrated group of the Mersey Era. This gutsy R n B band had one problem, they were all female. Had the world's 1st all girl guitar group been male, they probably would have been bigger in the UK. Thankfully the Germans were not as sexist as this country and in West Germany they got the success they deserved. When it comes to Girl Power, they beat the Spice Girls hands down. An excellent no nonsense rhythm and blues album by a band that should have been much bigger in the UK.

Excelente y superdivertida recopilacion
Diversion a go go garantizada.

From Mersyside to Hamburg - Complente Star - Club
