Q: Will this work on air canada?

The dimensions are within the limits for all US carriers, should be good for air Canada as well.

Q: Are the zippers metal or plastic?

They're metal, and pretty reliable. I open my front compartment constantly while traveling because that's where I keep all the charging stuff...never had a problem with any of the zippers. This is a really nice bag, I hate to part with it but why did they make it one stinking inch too big for the overhead compartments????!!!
