Refined for improved breathability and protection, these comfortable running shoes are the latest evolution of the well-loved Fresh Foam Hierro silhouette. A TPU-coated textile upper with a shrouded construction helps to protect toes and keep the inside of your trail shoes free of bothersome debris during your off-road runs. A comfortable bootie construction and lace-up closure help ensure a snug and secure fit, while the eye-catching New Balance branding adds sleek and sporty style. Underfoot, you’re treated to super soft comfort with Fresh Foam midsole technology that has been precision-engineered to deliver an ultra-cushioned, lightweight ride. The durable Vibram MegaGrip outsoles of these outdoor running shoes work to provide superior grip and multi-directional traction so you can comfortably push your boundaries, wherever you decide to roam.

Ultra comfortable, durable shoe
I've had NB Fresh Foam in the past and I think it's the best support and cushion. I bought the Hierro, specifically this V5 because of the Fresh Foam but also because of other design choices. The sole is a great 'multi-purpose' choice. It's good year round on all surfaces. I previously had a NB 1080. The Hierro is better for me because of the vibram sole and other design choices. The forefoot (or ball of my foot area) has more mid cushion then the 1080s so I feel less like I'm angled down towards my toes. The Fresh Foam midsole is built up more evenly across the entrie foot. The TPU coating (so a plastic coating) over a still breathable mesh outer fabirc material makes it more durable then the 1080s as well. The toe protect area is a huge plus for me too. It's really tough, solid and textured rubber. That's the part of the shoe that normally wears out first for me. So the Hierro V5 is an extremely comfortable, light shoe with durable enhancements over the 1080 series. I got the grey and blue color and it looks great. Over all, a well thought out shoe that just works. Use it for running, trail running, gym workouts or just where it for an all day walker, you won't be disappointed!

These Are Great, But I Might Cut The Tail Off
I'm sure the tail on the back of these shoes has a purpose, and I haven't taken the time to research what it is. I'm not using them to run through a forest or compete in some adventure race. I just like trail running shoes as an everyday sneaker in the pacific northwest. The tail thing is somewhat of an annoyance for driving, but I wouldn't subtract a star for that. These have been consistently comfortable enough that I may now be a convert after decades spent with Asics. Not only has the fit of Asics been so inconsistent in the last 3 or 4 generations of the Nimbus, but I recently had an unpleasant customer service experience after one of their shoes fell apart very quickly (it was a specialty field cleat, purchased on Amazon, and they didn't honor the warranty because they said Amazon was not an authorized retailer).Back to the NB's. They're ugly, for sure. No points there with the wife or friends, but they have more all-day comfort than my Nimbuses or either of the past 2 generations of Wave Runners (which I sometimes prefer to the Nimbuses). Best of all, 2E means 2E. So if other D-width shoes are just a tiny bit too narrow for your big man feat, these get the job done without being obscenely wide and sloppy.Oh, and since it's a huge pet peeve of mine when people on the internet can't seem to agree what a wide shoe means (e.g. I've seen people cheer for the amazing width of a shoe that ended up being like a vice clamp on my feet), I will specify that the widest measurement of my forefoot, taken with a calibrated digital caliper is exactly 101mm. My foot is exactly 11.125 inches long. The size 12 2E fits perfectly (where perfect = not super snug, but not unstably loose).

THE BEST TRAIL RUNNING SHOES
The Hierros are the best trail running shoes I’ve ever owned. I’m on my second pair and they are nearly perfect. The V5 Hierros are lightweight with excellent cushioning and a really comfortable fit. I put about 700 miles on my first pair before the cushioning broke down and they were still in great shape. There are 2 VERY MINOR issues with these shoes: 1. The lacing system is a little finicky and makes it hard to tighten them down in rough terrain. It distributes the tension across the shoes and works well but feels a little unfocused. 2. There’s a small heel flap that’s perfectly designed to throw mud at the back of your leg when it’s wet. Those are minor issues - BUY THESE SHOES. THEY ARE AMAZING!

Amazing shoe! (needs personal modification IMO)
Great shoe, and love the 5 mm Vibram lugs on the bottom. Only downside is the tail rudders. I mean I know they’re trail runners but come on, lose it NB. That said, this is my second pair and I removed the rudders myself via sharp scissors and a little sanding with a small rotary tool (i.e. Dremel). The shoe itself is form fitting, and not too plush and not too rigid, nice “balance” between the two.I have a chronic ankle injury and these help me get by. Not only are they often my daily wear, but I use them for basic hikes, maybe 6 miles or so, before I regret wearing something more substantial like a boot.Hope this helps!

Jack of All Trades?
I like one pair of shoes for most everything I do: walking, hiking, jogging. My feet, back, and hips don't do well if I change shoes with each activity. For this reason, I was hoping these shoes would make a good jack of all trades. So far, they're working great. They're really very comfortable, especially under foot. They're stable and fit well. My teenage kids thought they looked pretty retro as well (I agree : ). As a Jack of all trades, however, they are master of none. I wouldn't run a race in them. I wouldn't do more than an overnight, light hike trip. I might use them as a walking travel shoe. What I like is that I can wear them most of the time for all the different things I do. I don't have to keep changing shoes. All in all, I think they're great. As a trail running shoe, I would say that they're functional as long as you're not trying to win any races or do anything too extreme. The tongue, lacing system, laces, and weight all kind of add up against that. If you want to head out to the trail for a couple mile run in the morning, and then head back to town for coffee and to pick up a couple of things you need at the store, and then on to work for the day with an evening walk after dinner... you'll never have to take these off. As a bonus... at least one person in each of those settings will think your shoes look cool. As a great bonus, I don't think I'll need to buy another pair of shoes for at least a year. I think these will last a long time.
