I bought this bed for my cat. She won't sleep inside - sleeps on top. How can I tempt her to sleep inside?

Kate, I bought one for our 2 small dogs in Feb., & they wouldn't go inside either; it isn't the orthopedic one. The top wouldn't stay up. I finally turned it inside out so they could just lay on the inside Sherpa lining b/c they both really enjoy their Snoozer Lookout carseats. Our Bichon claimed the Cozy Cave & loves it. I just bought this orthopedic one so they'll both have one, & hopefully can do the same if they won't go in it. I don't know if this is helpful @ all for your cats since dog personalities are much different. :) But they all love snuggly spots to snooze. BTW, I bought both Cozy Caves in Amazon Warehouse for $32 & $37 & change in 'Very Good' condition, & also one of the Snoozer carseats. Everything I've bought in the Warehouse deals looks new.

My dog is a precious 50lb terrier/pit. will the xl be sturdy and big enough for him. he's a putz so wanna make sure it is sturdy enough.

My honest opinion is that it will not be easy for your precious to get in it comfortably. I bought one for my 12 lb dachshund who did not like it and she loves caves. It was not easy for her to get into it as the top is not that high from the bottom. It is not that cushy on the bottom either - firmer than it is cozy. The top is pretty rigid so does what it is supposed to do and stay open. I would not think this bed would be good for a bigger dog like a terrier/pit. That said, I believe it is sturdy enough. I'm just not sure it would be big enough.

For those who have bought this: The top looks floppy. How does it stay open so the dog will get in instead of lying on top?

It depends on the dog. I have three of them for my three dogs. One snuggles inside; the other two sleep on top. There is a solid plastic tube that runs along the top so it can be propped open a bit.

Is this bed really only 21x28 inches? The non orthopedic version is 46 inches.
