Is it good for thinning oil paints

Seems to be okay. However, I can't vouch for any long-term colour issues such as yellowing, etc...

Can it be used to wash thick oil painta from brushes?

Yes, I use it for all my oil paint brushes. Half fill a small clean jar with the white spirit, place your brushes in it and leave for an hour, then rinse brushes under tap. Pour a little washup liquid into the palm of your hand and work the brushes into it one at a time, rinse thoroughly under tap. Place on kitchen paper to dry.
