great info for beginners
This is a great book for beginners to get their heads into mushrooms. It covers the basic background behind mushrooms, their history and a number of varieties and an outline of mushrooms varieties suited to growing at home. The book then moves on to provide a walkthrough of the process of growing mushrooms and a sampling of the equipment that the author recommends to grow mushrooms and well as a number of tips to aid growth including the all important place you select to grow your mushrooms. The overall style is kept simple and easy which is very handy for those people just starting out.I found the section of organic solutions to deal with pests useful as I'm not a fan of using chemical sprays, so this will also appeal to the organic fans out there. The parts about ways to preserve your mushrooms and drying methods were also helpful.Overall, recommended for beginners

Easy to Follow Instructions and Great for Beginners
The author of this manual follows the KISS principle: keep it simple, stupid! I found this book to be well-written with great examples, short, sweet, and to the point. If you've ever considered raising your own mushrooms, Frank Randall delivers with specific examples. He tells you the positive and negative of his experiences of growing different varieties of mushrooms, as well as what to try as a beginner and what varieties to wait on growing until you have more experience (but with tips on how to grow the harder ones).I have started my first batch using this guide - wish me luck! I picked this up for free during a Kindle promotion and, as I write this review, I see the pricing is now at $2.99 - money well-spent.

Don't waste your money.
This was a complete waste os $3.00. The reason i gave this 1 star is because amazon does not allow posting reviews with 0 stars. This is a very complete and detailed summary of the book:You can grow mushrooms. Indoors or outdoors. They take longer to grow outdoors. Grow them from a kit or from spores. They need certain conditions to grow. They are fun to watch growing and are tasty. You can fry, slice, freeze and dry them. Keep things clean. Here's my amazon shopping list with everything you'll need. Links to other books. Most of the stuff in the list (that I quickly eyed over) is stuff put in there so the author can make a little bit of cash every time someone buys one of the items in the list. Some of them aren't even needed to grow mushrooms at all.The links to other books? Don't bother. Just a bunch of other so called books like this one.The reality is that this should have been a free pamphlet. You'll get a lot more out of videos on youtube and some really great web sites out there.

Some info for a total newb, but kinda low content in general
As a total shroom newb, I did get some info out of this book, but...I have a couple reasons for giving it 3 stars. My first is admittedly nebulous - the whole thing felt kind of lazy. More like someone tossing a few comments at you instead of actually caring if you're getting a solid base of info. Then there's the fact of its price, as a book, when it's really just an article. I feel like "that's it?" instead of that I have a good start.A rather big negative for me was the shopping list at the end. The list still exists, but some of the products don't, so it hasn't been updated in a while. And at least one of the items has really bad reviews, and some of the prices aren't really very newb-friendly. I feel strongly that if you leave a list in a printed book that people pay for, you need to keep that list up, and make sure the products/vendors are still available or replace them if needed. If you're a complete shroom-noob like me, I think it's worth 3 stars, but unless you start out as empty headed on the subject as I did, you probably won't get any use from this "book".

Great starter on Mushrooms!
I love mushrooms, especially in the fall picking them fresh in the fields near my home. I must say I thought I knew a lot about them until I started reading this book! I had no idea that there were 5 different parts to a mushroom. The book goes into great detail on the anatomy and life cycle of the mushroom, the many different types and has pictures of them too. I have to say that the tips for growing mushrooms at home are really helpful and doing it organically is a must. You will discover this and more inside this well put together book!

A lot of chaff, no body.,..
two stars just because I feel generous and like people who love mushrooms. This book basicaly doesn't contain any useful information HOW to grow mushrooms. A lot of chaff, talking about commercial kits, nothing about technical details of it. The booklet is quite skiny, some 45 pages that include dedication, contents, etc. that could be possible to digest in 3 or 4 pages of foreword and followed with a real info how to do it. I would gladly pay more. The booklet is more about "why to grow mushrooms" which is something I don't need any info about, because I love them and in Southern California they are very sparce in wild. Also one technical correction - you DON"T need a pressure cooker to get temperatures in the 160 - 200 F range. The boiling temperature of water is 212 F at sea level; you would have to be living at almost 7,000 feet to get water boiling in less than 200 F.Sorry, Mister Randall...

Are you a mushroom lover? You shouldn't miss this book...
I am homemaker and been always like to cook and create new dishes. There are certain dishes that require mushrooms. I am always curious how to look for good quality and always turn to the internet for information. Unfortunately, the web is a place with lots of bit and pieces of information. Until then, I stumbled upon this book that talked about edible mushrooms. I particularly liked the chapter on where to grow mushrooms, what are the organic ways to deal with mushroom pests and molds, and most importantly learn to keep my mushrooms fresh. Highly recommended for mushroom lover.. you should not miss this book out... Great read.

Simply written, but detailed enough to start growing mushrooms
We get ordinary button mushrooms cheaply and in quantity from the market much of the year. Other mushroom varieties, however, can be a lot more expensive and I've always fancied growing some - this is why I was looking for a book on the subject.Frank Randall covers the subject very well. He tells us about the structure of mushrooms, how they reproduce, the types we can grow, and how to cultivate them indoors or outdoors. He also includes a link to a handy ready made shopping list of things like substrate, starter kits ... and logs and Marmite (you'll see why in the book). The book is well written and interesting, and the links and bookmarks (table of contents, etc) all work.
