Only for small area of digging due to the stress on the medal portion. Clay ground adds to the stress.

Q: What gauge is "Heavy Gauge" steel?

I do not believe the gauge of steel was given, but this shovel has been more than adequate for my use in and around my perennial gardens and raised beds. In fact I now own two of them, just in case... It was not easy finding a small shovel with standard length handle. I love it for digging in close spaces! No, it's not designed for digging stumps or piles of rocks, but its size makes it the perfect tool for use in flower borders.

Q: Is the shovel blade really 12 inches wide? i am trying to replace one with only a 6-inch wide x 8-inch long blade!

The blade is NOT 12" wide. I just measured mine. Straight across, the width of the blade at its top is 6". It is 8" tall, from the top edge (where you would place your foot to dig) to its bottom tip. I bought mine also to replace an old one. This one was the closest I could come to the old one. It's my go-to spade for the perennial garden.

Q: How sharp is the blade of this shovel?

I purchased this shovel after borrowing something similar from a neighbor. This blade isn't as sharp as the blade in her shovel, but I've already used it quite a bit and haven't had any problem cutting through roots etc.
