can this be used outdoors?

Yes of course Sarah G. I have two of these thermometers. One I keep indoors to monitor living room temperatures and help maximise the efficiency of my home heating system, and the other is fixed to a North facing fence in the garden. This position shields it from direct sunlight which would give an above average temperature and not the true outside temperature. I set it each morning after breakfast and then over the next 24 hours the highest day reading and lowest temperature of the following night are recorded. The position in the garden close to the garden path is such that I can easily read the current temperature at any time. The outdoor thermometer has stood up to all types of weather over the past two winters and summers. The first winter was very cold with hard frosts and considerable snow. This winter was of course very wet. No problems at all. Just now and again I remove the thermometer and give it a quick wipe over to remove dirt and any excess moisture. It is accurate and reliable. I can't say anymore than that.

Hi Wendy, it's a bog standard AAA battery it uses. No complaints about this product so far. I've had it since early spring and it's still the same battery. Performance is excellent - easy to set up, easy to use and easy to reset.

I have 818-111 please advice as to why the digital readout is now only giving partial numbers and this after only a couple of months

First try changing the battery, if this does not improve it could be water or damp ingress into the thermometers into electronic.
