Excellent movie..

The story takes place in Germany in the year 1948, right after WWII. It is the story about a young boy, Karel, who was seperated from his mother in a concentration camp.He was saved be the allies and arrives with hundrets of other children in a US refugee camp. When he and lots of other children were supposed to be relocated, he flees. When pursuited by soldiers, another boy drowns in a river and Karel drops his hat into the water and hides, so he is declared dead. After a few days a US soldier, Steve, unaware about these cirmumstances, brings Karel into his home and takes care of him. Out of fear Karel never tells his true name or origin, so he becomes Jim.Meanwhile his mother roams throughout Germany and searches for her lost son. In every refugee camp she's been to they don't know him. When she reaches that camp where Karel has been brought to, they show her the found hat, which she recognizes, and tell her about the tragic incident.By this time Jim has learnt English pretty well. The investigations by Steve for Jim's mother end in a letter saying that Jim's mother has been in a concentration camp in which only dead people have been found. So his mother also is declared dead.Steve plans to take Jim back to the States with him, while Jim's (Karel's) mother accepts the fact that her son no longer lives and heads back to Czechoslovakia.It seems like mother and son will never see each other again...
