This is a Beast!
I have a good DeWalt drill, DeWalt driver, Craftsman drill, Makita drill and Makita driver and they all work fine, for a DRILL. But this DeWalt Max XR is a GREAT drill! Of course it is heavier, but it will do HEAVY work. The variable speed trigger and three speed choices gives good versatility for the many and various jobs, from merely drilling holes to screwing lag bolts in posts and jacking up my car with the scissor jack -- there's a reason it comes with a side handle, especially handy jacking up my car -- this drill has torque! The lighter drills are fine for most jobs, but every professional should own one of these! Oh yes, it works GREAT at hammering when it comes to drilling concrete too!

Better than some of the corded hammer drills I've owned.
Pretty hefty. I love that it feels balanced in my hands. It may be a little heavy for a smaller user, but not for me. I used it to drill through brick. I don't think I'm having any issue with it drilling through 2x4 boards. The controls for speed are easy to use. I'm a DIY guy, using the 5 Amp batteries. They last long enough for me to get out of it what I need.

Dewalt for the W!
Great price point for a super good quality drill if you’re on the job daily with it. This particular drill gets the job done and hasn’t let me down yet, and I bought it months ago and work on some high end projects that require a lot of use. It is a little bulky, but you can get passed that with the performance it allows you.

Powerful
I have a 11 year old DeWalt DCD 790 drill that has served me well. However I needed a drill that could power my 8 inch ice auger and the 790 just didn't have the power for that. I also have some projects coming up that require a hammer drill. Since I already have a bunch of DeWalt tools, it made sense to look at DeWalt for a new drill/hammer drill. After looking at reviews of this drill, showing how powerful it is, and the anti-rotation system, I decided to pull the trigger when I saw it on sale ($202). I think the anti-rotation system is a must when you are using large hole saws or something like an ice auger. I've had painful experiences when a large bit jams and the drill keeps turning, twisting your wrist to unnatural angles. The anti-rotation system on this drill works flawlessly. Drilling thru 30 inches of ice, my ice auger jammed just before getting thru the ice and the drill immediately shutdown. All the indicator lights on the drill turn red when the anti-rotation system kicks in. Just release the trigger and it resets. It is one of the best new features I've seen on a power tool. The drill functions are extensive. The three speed gear box allows you to set your drilling to just about any material you are going to drill. The clutch is electronic and not only allows slippage at the select clutch point, but adjusts the drill's speed depending on the clutch setting. At the lightest clutch setting the drill is slowed considerably. I've only done one test hole with the hammer drill function, but it drilled 6" into a cinder block very quickly. In hammer mode, the drill spins much faster than in drill mode and gear speed 3. The LED light is really useful. It's as bright as a flashlight, is adjustable up and down, and you can set it to stay on for up to 20 minutes. The downside on this drill is the weight and the price. With a 6 AH Flex-Volt battery attached and the handle, it comes in at 7 lbs 2 oz. Not something you want to be holding over your head for any length of time. The MSRP of $249 is pretty steep for a drill/hammer drill and probably not worthwhile unless you really need the power this drill provides.

If you've been using ni-cad 18 V tools, you don't know what you've been missing.
I just recently started replacing my old Dewalt 18V tools with nicad batteries and brushed motors with these new 20V brushless tools that use the LiOn batteries. My first tool was their high end reciprocating saw, which came with an 8AH XR Max battery. It was an absolute beast and light years better than my old saw. I mention that tool because its battery has formed the basis for my new tools, which this hammer drill is the second. The batteries are like the energizer bunny, and I can't say enough good things about the brushless motors in both of these. This hammer drill came without a battery in case there's any confusion. No matter. I could not be happier with it.

Heavy duty impact drill
Arrived without box or manual. Appears to be new and in plastic bag. Reason for taking off one star. Tool itself is five stars. Don’t understand how this drill was separated from its box. Wanted an impact drill for concrete work. Compared to my other DeWalt 20v drills, this drill is massive. Really nice detachable side handle. With a drill this powerful you need a side handle to support your strong hand! You can feel the torque it produces just by triggering the on switch. Tried the impact function with 5/8” concrete bit. Drilled a 2” hole in about 30 seconds in hard concrete. Appears to be very durable with clutch function I find highly valuable. You can set clutch value, select only drill function or impact function. Impact selection rotates the bit. Recommend this drill for heavy duty use.
