Excellent
Excellent work. I always found it difficult to precisely express my ideas in a written academic format. However, this book has eased my fears over my ability to do so. Thanks to this book my writing will be elevated to the next level. The reason why I did not give 5 stars is because the book should be longer with even more phrases and explanations of academic language.

A time-saver for Academic writers
When I was doing my M.A. in an English-speaking country, I'd waste a lot of time when writing my term papers looking for a formal/academic-sounding way of conveying what I wanted to say. I mean, how many times can you write "So and So claim..." or "This study aims..." before your reader thinks there is something seriously wrong with your command of the English language? I'd end up looking for articles not for content but for form and lifting the expressions from there. Needless to say, that was really time-consuming. Luiz Otavio Barros has saved us that precious writing time: he's listed the most useful sentences and phrases in Academic English, esp. for term papers and articles. The book itself follows the stages of an article and brings the gambits you'll need to write your introduction, then the literature review, then the methodology, and so on, so forth. On top of that, each chapter ends with a few tips/explanations based on common language mistakes learners make, followed by a short exercise to consolidate what you've read.

Some mistakes in it
This book has some good phrases, which are definitely useful to some extent. However, it also has a few mistakes in it that bother me in an style guide for academics writing."If" and "Whether" can not be used interchangeably. I don't want to explain the difference here so please google it.Using "whether or not" is very commong in spoken English. While studying for the GMAT I learned many interesting things that are technically wrong in "perfect English." This "whether or not" is an example of it. "Because" and "due to" can also not be used interchangably in many instances.*sigh*

Comprehensive, easy to use
Luiz Otávio Barros is one of the most brilliant language educators I have met in my career: he has an intuitive grasp of language genres and language use, and is a personable engaging teacher. This book reflects his brilliance: comprehensive, well-researched, easy to navigate, tight presentations. I highly recommend the Kindle/e-book version because you can take advantage of the instant cross-referencing of terms. Barr-avo!
