do they have to be soaked or how do you cook them presumably not ready to eat

Never eat them raw! Most beans contain a toxic substance which needs to be deactivated by cooking. If you want to make tofu/soya milk pour boiling water over them and boil for one minute, then turn off and soak for 30 mins, then Blend, filter, simmer milk for about 10 mins. If you don’t mind a Beany flavour you can soak them in cold water prior to blending/cooking.

Can these be roasted?

I wouldn't have thought so They take about 3 hours to boil and then you have to cook them in the soup or stew for an hour or 2 and then some of the are still hard
