can i apply this on it's own, without also using glue?

The tape does have a sticky bit which adheres to the underside of the carpet runner but the glue does help it become more stable. I have never done anything like this before but it is simple to use and the runner looks great with the edging on.

I’m in the UK and an nervous about purchasing incase the colour is not quite right. Can I return the item free of charge?

The gluing is to minimise fraying of the carpet. If the carpet is woven I don't think it would be vital but if tufted, I think it is wise to use a glue gun; an ordinary basic glue gun is sufficient but you will need quite a few glue stick. The backing strip sticks quite well as it is self adhesive. The end result is very satisfactory but not as good as professional binding
