If you've read and loved These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends, you will LOVE Foul Lady Fortune. Same perfectly balanced mix of historical fiction, mystery and romance, with a focus on characters we didn't know that well in the first duology. To be honest, when I found out Rosalind was going to be the main character I thought "Okay, that's.... a choice". I didn't wanna know more about her and I was convinced I wasn't going to like her story. But, boy, WAS I WRONG!!! Let me just say she quickly climbed my rankings and now she's in my personal top 3 of Chloe Gong's characters. As with TVD and OVE, my absolutely favorite thing was how seamlessly Gong manages to weave historical facts with drama and a smidge of fantasy/magical realism. I got so into the history of 20th century China that I ended up reading a whole history NON FICTION (!!!) book about it. Her characters are all so distinctive and well-rounded, even the secondary ones have the sort of depth that is often difficult to find even in main characters. The mystery was *chef's kiss*! Way better than the mysteries in the first two books. The plot twist left me kind of speechless. I will definitely read anything Chloe Gong decides to publish and I can't wait to pick up Foul Heart Huntsman!

This huge novel, although falling under the Young Adult category— and thus prone to be not taken seriously, is one of the best works of our times. Why? Firstly, to weave such a story, the author has chosen a landscape which has been neglected by most practioners of speculative fiction. That's a shame. Shanghai of 1930-s could have (should have) challenged Berlin or Lisbon as a theatre of intrigue and tension. That city and its people have been used beautifully as the stage for this violent drama. Secondly, crime, politics, speculation, and fantasy have mixed seamlessly here. As a result, the reader is bound to do some historical research purely out of curiosity, while being amazed by the 'fantastic' events (pun intended). Thirdly, the plot— despite being derived from numerous well-established tropes— seems fresh due to the very real political razor's edge that every character has to walk on. And the pace was furious. Consequently, this huge book was practically unputdownable. Weaknesses? 1. The writing is stilted. Had the author infused some wit, even some wisecracks into the dialogues, it would have made the reading a lot more charming. 2. The open-ended nature and deliberate ploy of using the mode of betrayal, to keep us hanging for the next part, felt bad. However, all said and done, I would again state that this fantasy is very good indeed. Recommended.

Discovered the author in late 2020 with These Violent Delights and fell in love with her works ever since. She has quickly become one of my favourites if not my favourite author. Wether you read the duology or not (though i highly HIGHLY reccomend you do) this one book is not one you want to miss. If you're already familiar with the way the author is able to hook you straight up from page one you'll find this sequel/spin off egregiously addictive, especially in the way the characters are so multidimensional and feel real
