Q: Is this good for a long smoke, or a short break?

It stays cool and has a decent sized bowl so you can use it for a long smoke. Even though it doesn't have a filter it doesn't get as gurgly as a standard sized non-filtered pipe due to the long bit.

Q: Is the rusticated bowl on this pipe black or dark brown?

Black. Bowl has a long break-in tim, at least mine did, due to the thinness but it's a very good pipe. I'm pleased with it.
