Q: Dont know if to buy 35L or 55L?

The 55L rolls down nicely into a bit smaller package. I use if for my cycling commute to work. It comfortably holds my change of clothes and shoes, my lunch, and my laptop, and still have plenty of room left a few more things if I need to bring them. It looks big when standing empty, but is not so when using it.

Q: How comfortable are the straps, looking to carry heavy gear?

I find the pack comfortable, the straps do not bite and are padded well. I typically cycle with 5-10 Kg of stuff in it and, but I am sure you can put a whole lot more in the 55l pack.

Q: Can the bag be padlocked to a motorbike while on a cross channel ferry?

due to the clips for the straps there is nothing to put a padlock on, you could always unclick from bike and take it with you on ferry
