Will the side pocket hold a thermos?

No the side pockets are smaller

My lunch bag did not come with a strap, is that normal?

Put ice in ziploc bags. I ce put in bags stayed all day. If ice in no bags and ice does melt dump the water

It comes with a strong smell, is it ok for my food? will the strong smell get into my food? is the smell toxic? should i wash it before use?

You could certainly wipe it out, but just letting it air out a bit should work. Generally soft plastics are going to smell when you first open them.
