This is a well balanced book that covers both Verilog design and and a clear complete reference. My background is in embedded software engineering and I wanted to learn something new so I decided so programing and FPGA in Verilog seemed like a good fit. I had previously purchased a book focused on examples which was not a good fit for me since I had never done and programming in Verilog before.I looked at new books but the price was high since they all seemed to be for College students or professionals. But I needed something more for an advanced hobbyist. So I found this gem used for a great price. It was noted that the book was used and only had minor issues so I took a chance.Turns out the condition was like new and clearly used by a college student since the SMALL number example multiple choice quizzes had the answers marked with a fine mechanical pencil and the included CD had not even been opened. I note SMALL number of quizzes since the number does not waste space that is better used for information.The book has a perfect balance of design and reference material. I am impressed by the amount of very clear information. This book is excellent at pacing the information you need. It is smart about giving examples at the beginning that focus on the early information you need and rather than getting into the more complex ideas early just indicates these other more advance topics with come is a specified later chapter.If you can find a reasonable priced used version of this book and want are a hobbyist, student or a professional and want to learn Verilog, buy this book.The book is completely hardware agnostic but I am using a Tang Nano 9K FPGA Development Board which is inexpensive and works great. Be aware if your background is software Verilog is really a hardware engineering tool and as such is not the same as another software language.

After waiting an inordinate time for delivery, the book arrived. After the first 45 pages, the author finally begins to discuss the subject. Although the author's credentials were cited thoroughly, the book is not consistent with his reputation. There are numerous basic errors, misspellings, etc. But it gets worse when the author has fundamental errors such as in the diagram and coding of a full-adder. This is not the text for a first introduction, since the student risks great confusion. With proper corrections it could become a good volume, but it does need thorough review and revision.

Covers the basic material but not an eloquent author. I don't expect him to be loquacious but the treatment of some topics is pretty dry.
