Red, White & Quilted Paperback – Illustrated, September 9, 2014

The twelve drop-dead-gorgeous quilts we can make using this book are modeled after antiques. I have long loved red and white quilts and I'm very happy with the patterns the author chose for this book. And, oh... the photos of the antique quilts are so beautiful.All of the antique examples are from the collection of Ann M. Hazelwood. Ms. Hazelwood also shares the interesting history of the red and white quilt in the foreword, which I found fascinating.The finished "replicas" are lovely but what makes them spectacular and stunning, to me, is the machine quilting done in each and every one. The skill displayed by those who performed the quilting is amazing. I found myself oohing and ahhing my way through the pages. Each quilt comes with "Quilting Notes" from the talented quilter.The book begins with a few brief general instructions covering yardage requirements, border yardage, prewashing, hints on piecing, half-square triangle units, adding borders, preparing for quilting, and binding. The instructions to make each individual quilt are comprehensive and detailed.Also, for comparison, you might want to look at  Red, White, and Sometimes Blue: Classics from McCall's Quilting . I particularly love the applique that is used in this particular book.Happy quilting!
