Q: So far nothing is coming out of the bulb...it’s been in the soil approximately 10 days...is it slow to get started?

Amaryllis bulbs are dormant and need to wake up before they sprout. The time that takes can vary based on variety, temperature of the room (cooler temps slow sprouting a bit) and even the individual plant. Your bulb is well within the normal range. If you watered the bulb when you planted it, don't water again until you see a sprout; the plant doesn't need much moisture at this stage and you want to avoid bulb rot. Give it a bit more time. . . it'll be worth it!

Q: previous bulbs I purchased came with soil and a pot. Does this bulb need special soil? I was surprised this came in newspaper!

Make sure the bulb is only covered half way with soil and it gets lots of water! Do not let it dry out-I think it is almost impossible to overwater as long as there is drainage. They do not like cold drafts. It sounds like you may have them covered with too much soil because the one I gave as a gift for Christmas started blooming a couple of weeks ago and is almost finished but it is gorgeous!!!!
