Are the plastic components BPA free? Why do you have plastic components?

Still 2023, and the Tea Maker™ Brushed Stainless Steel Model: BTM800XL, product still has plastic that that goes into contact with boiling water. I do not recommend this product; Breville has another model similar product, without plastic.

As of March 2014, I do not see replacement carafes on the Breville site. If the glass breaks, where can I find a new carafe?

There is no replacement carafe. I confirmed this by calling Breville. Since I am out of warranty, they offered a 25% discount to replace the entire tea maker.

Can this tea maker boil hot water like an electric kettle? (Without brewing tea)

I haven't used it for water only, but...the directions say that it does. You can custom set to heat to 212 degree (which is the temp. fo boiled water) with a max. 10 minute brew time. I suspect that would definately boil the water for you. You just need to select that option. It will keep it hot for you also, for up to 4 hours I think (I do not currently have the directions in front of me). It is like that for the tea anyway. You will not regret purchasing this. I it is one of the best purchases I have made in a long time.

Does the type of water you use (tap vs. filtered) seem to impact the life of the product?

It doesn't, special cleaning powder descales and removes tannic buildup. however, tea tastes better with filtered water.
