Rio Bravo (2 Disc Special Edition) [1959] [DVD]

One of the greatest films of all time.
This is a stunning film. A true archetype. So much of this has been remade (literally remade twice by the same director but inspirationally many more times) because it is so damned good.Dean Martin opens this film with an incredible near silent scene that sets everything up. When The Duke arrives things just get taken up a notch. All the leads bring their A game and give a masterclass on how much can be done with so little. John Wayne may well be mocked for always playing himself but just watch this damned film... a tiny look, the rise of an eyebrow... it is so good. Dean Martin just nails the recovering alcoholic... I can't praise this enough. This really and truly is the birth of modern cinema. No scene is wasted, tension builds, the story is progressed, exposition is done on the fly... it is brilliant.

One of the best Wayne movies
This is one of the very best John Wayne movies. Simple as that. It is one to see again and again and with numerous little classic scenes. Nothing but praise!

Rio Bravo
Rio Bravo, along with Eldorado, provide a diptych of late Westerns (I shall explain what I mean by that term, in a minute) at their best from a master director, Howard Hawks, who essayed many film genres and hardly never had a dud that I know about in any of them.I personally think that Rio Bravo is slightly superior to the Eldorado, particularly because of that superlative supporting actor Walter Brennan. To add to that, Angie Dickinson provides far more than just the perfunctory love interest which is supplied in Eldorado. Though it has to be said that the James Caan is far more assured in his introductory screen role than Ricky Nelson. What do I mean by 'late Western'. In a late Western, the interplay of character and an articulate, often witty script is just as important as the gunplay. Hawks minted a particular style of naturalistic conversational interplay, at least by the standard of the times, which was all his own.In short, Rio Bravo is the classical Hollywood film through which to unwind. Sit back and let the stars, director and writers entertain you. They can't make them like that any more.

Great singing
As John Wayne films go it's not one of his best, but with Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson as Co stars, that makes it a little better. Dean sings 'My rifle, pony and me' with Ricky on guitar, What a voice !! also Ricky sings Get along home cindy, cindy accompanied by DM and Walter Brennan on harmonica which makes this film more bearable to watch just for that.

One of the best.
Still one of the best John Wayne westerns ever made and many other films have been based on it. Brilliant story with a great cast and still one of the best songs ever sang in a film, by a couple of legends. This one is definitely hard to beat and can be watched over and over again without ever getting bored of it. Great for Amazon Prime, so you can watch it anywhere; at home, at work or anywhere you want.

Rio Bravo
A good old western film where everything comes right in the end.

Entertainment value
Not John Wayne at his best. If I'd known beforehand I'd never have paid for it . Very poor acting and storyline. I'd advise anyone to save their money and steer clear of it..
