![Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) - Shah Rukh Khan - Kajol - Bollywood - Indian Cinema - Hindi Film [DVD] [NTSC]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81REJ9pvnNL.jpg)

Product Description Having been brought up in London, Raj (Shahrukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol) are second generation British Asians, who still cherish their Indian roots, culture and values. The two meet in a chance encounter while travelling through Europe on an inter-rail holiday. When they get separated from their friends, they discover each other.... they discover LOVE! When they return to London, Simian is taken back to India, for an arranged marriage as per her father's wishes. Now Raj must go to India to win his Dulhania and ask Simran's father for her hand in marriage and seek acceptance of their love - all this, while the preparations for Simran's wedding are in full swing. Review The phenomenally popular Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (it played in Indian theaters for five years straight) is, in many ways, a perfect introduction to Bollywood. With a perfectly executed classic Hollywood boy-meets-girl plot, charismatic stars and great songs, it overflows with the specific kind of joy that only great Bollywood movies can produce. The film is dominated by Shah Rukh Khan, who careens through it like a hyperactive Cary Grant, charming everyone in his path and generally showing why he's been one of the most popular bollywood stars of the past decade. Khan can be hard to take seriously in dramatic efforts like Dil Se and Asoka, but he excels at comedy. His interactions with Amrish Puri as Simran's stern, glowering father, are particularly hilarious. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is also a very picturesque film. Its beauty doesn't end when the action moves to Punjab for the second half, where several scenes take place in a gorgeous field of yellow flowers stretching to the horizon. An immensely likeable movie, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge performs the rarely-achieved feat of stretching a predictable plot over three hours and making every minute enjoyable. --www.platform47.comDilwale made me glad to be a Westerner, just so I could experience the sheer rush in the glorious way this film simply throws its Indian sensibility in your face. It is one of the most completely, openly joyful films I have ever seen. In many ways a totally Western film, it is yet completely un-Western, and absolutely invigorating. I found the (rather oddly looped in places) mix of Hindi and English dialog to be a lot of fun to follow (as incomplete as the subtitles sometimes seemed). The Indian/Western pop structure of the songs was entertaining and infectious. The choreography is simply amazing, and some of the most sheerly athletic I've seen. The Indian roots of the dance routines were at first almost unnerving--at once familiar yet bizarre, almost surreal (to my Western eyes). It was sheer fun making the cultural adjustment. The plot is predictable, almost pedestrian--certainly not what you'd call "never done before," and yet I found myself completely absorbed in the story, and rooting for the main characters. This is in large part due to Shahrukh Khan's and Kajol's performances as Raj and Simran. He is totally endearing, and she is totally hot!, and their on screen chemistry is as cute & perky and smoldering & steamy as Fred and Ginger at their peak. It was, simply put, fun to watch them having so much fun. Director Aditya Chopra was, I understand, only 24 when he made Dilwale, and the film was so successful its Indian first run lasted a world-record 11 years (and may still be going on, as far as I know). A heckuva testimony to Bollywood indeed. This movie has instantly become one of my favorite musicals, and I look forward to finding more films from Chopra, Khan, and Kajol. The Titanic of Bollywood
DDLJ is the best Indian film I've ever watched. Seeing the growth of SRK's character and the reunion of SRK and Kajol in the 2nd half of the film was truly unforgettable. The music in the film was also great! Loved the theme song Tujhe dekha to yeh jana sanam

must-see Bollywood classic of all time
a few years ago i wandered into an indian music/movies store and remembered long ago childhood saturday afternoon tv when a bollywood movie would come on. I asked the guy what would be a good movie to see if i was completely out of touch with indian cinema and he gave me this one... and i promptly fell in love with it. Currently (I believe, and there's no reason not to) India's longest-running movie since its original release in 1995, it's a classic romantic comedy with just the right amount of family drama, hectic mishaps, cheesy song and dance numbers and the tug of war between youth and tradition to tick every Bollywood box, and they do it SO well. Let's face it, this is the movie that cemented (if not initiated) Shah Rukh Khan's place in Bollywood's megastar lineup, and Kajol's as an extremely talented and personable actor.

This movie should be in the GCSE/A level curriculum
What a brilliant movie. Raj was so annoying and a git during the first half of the movie but behind the facade, he had some honest qualities and looks after Simran when she is "indisposed". Simran has a natural beauty which has not be spoilt. I was crying while trying to read the subtitles in the 2nd half of the movie, their lines were so touching. The mother's speech about "sacrifice" was brilliant. Look out for Raj's explanation to the father about the doves. The colourful clothes in India were a breath of fresh air on a cold, wet day. I can not recommend this movie enough. My boyfriend and I talked about it for hours the day after. This movie should be in the GCSE/A level curriculum for cross-culture situations.

Completely amazing start to finish
You won't find another movie like this truly was the among the best of its era and you won't find any movies to compare it to. I think this is one of the few movies that truly deserves a 10/10

Excellent bollywood movie
I really enjoyed this movie. Although I am not Asian I also had an arranged marriage and know what it would have been like to go against my parents wishes. This film moved me because I understood the cultural elements. It started off as a bit of a comedy and ended up being a true love story. The only reason I never gave it the full 5 stars is because the music is a bit dated. The cover of the dvd is different to the one advertised, but thats ok. There seemed to be an excellent chemistry between Sharuk Khan and Kajol. Would recommend this movie.

DDLJ rightly deserves being the longest running film of hindi cinema. No other bollywood movie has ever won as many filmfare awards as this classic.COME FALL IN LOVE ................ OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Extremely disappointing!
The heroines father being older obviously knows what's best for her. All because the potential bridegroom is the son of his old friend.Ah yes, the potential bridegroom is quite happy to get to get married. As he says after marriage what's there to prevent him from putting it about with those "sparklers" in England. What indeed? The doormat, wifey will stay in India, of course, and do her duty. Impressive! The heroine's father such an astute judge of character. Thank God indeed, the bridegroom is wholesome Indian born and bred. Not like the wasteral the hero!Strange how for 20 years he has sacrificed himself, denied himself the overwhelming pleasure of actually residing in India. His mother says (yawn, when aren't old people "just about to die") she is about to die and so to rush the wedding so she can witness it.The thought of 10 million makes the potential bridegroom's father glee with pleasure. The potential bridegroom thinks nothing of rounding up a gang, more than adequately armed to attack the unarmed hero. He also thinks nothing of physically beating the hero's father. Ah! Such respect for the older generation. Impressive! The songs are forgettable. There are a few decent comic moments, but otherwise it's not exciting, or worth dragging it out for 3 hours.
