3 stars, for now...because of one 250 word section
Lee is absolutely wrong about Cannabis and phyto-cannabinoids, as it seems many people are right now, especially with his quotes about how the banning of weed was some sort of "prohibition" style, and because of "propaganda".I actually just read an article by Alan Bergensen about how the entire legalization of pot was simply to protect recreational users, and not because of its medicinal effects, which have been crossly overblown and overhyped. It was actually propaganda to protect users, and not to promote some miraculous healing benefit of the plant.Lee also fails to mention that the "healing" benefits of CBD oil is not in the CBD itself, but in the actual oil base it is usually administered in, which most of the time is an oil with large amounts of MCTs or Omega 3 fatty acids. It has been known for a long time that the health benefits of hemp oil were in the fatty acid content, but not the CBD content. The "Endocannabinoid System" is not the "master regulator" of "homeostatis". I am sick of hearing that. There is no evidence or proof of this in any legitimate scientific arena. With regards to inflammation, the chemical signals that turn inflammation on and off are Prostaglandins, which are synthesized by the body from various fatty acids (like Omega 3s and GLA). The key is to balance pro-inflammatory prostaglandins (PgE2) with anti-inflammatory prostaglandins (PgE1 and 3). The way this is done is by increasing omega 3 fatty acid intake and gamma linolenic acid intake. Bear in mind this is way, way cheaper and far more effective than taking expensive CBD oil, or, worse, smoking pot. Also, there is absolutely no scientific sense that can be made by including cannabis in a book about the mitochondria. The fact that the author implies that THC has "beneficial effects" on the mitochondria is a total stretch that has zero basis in being in this book. Why are ND's so hard up for this stuff? There are cheaper and far more effective avenues to take, including using carnitine and repairing the microbiome. And THC does NOT support mitochondria at all, and we already know that the body recognizes it as an alien substance that it must detoxify as if it is a drug. Why would the author include this in a legitimate book about mitochondria function? Could it be that he is jumping on the band wagon and pushing lobbyist-style propaganda to appeal to the political leanings of the time? I think it is a bad call, and it shows you how one short, seemingly inconsequential section that amounts to less than 300 words can ruin an otherwise fine book. It's like a quarterback having an undefeated season, only to ruin it by losing the Super Bowl...Disappointing

This is an easy-to-read look at the latest in mitochondrial research and the mitochondrial theory of aging.
Can someone please explain why Dr. Know released this book with a new title when it contains virtually the same content as his previous "LIFE - The epic story of our mitochondria"???It's STILL a great book, one that will change your understanding of the aging process. Dr. Know uses his knowledge of mitochondria and the mitochondrial theory of aging to elucidate the role of mitochondria in chronic disease, from cancer, heart disease, metabolic syndrom and diabetes to neurological diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, ALS, ADHD, anxiety and depression. He explains how understanding the role of mitochondria in chronic disease closes many of the holes left by the "Free Radical" theory of aging and suggests rational interventions that should result in healthier mitochondria and longer health span. Excellent job!

Great book for those who want to know how their cells and energy work
Nicely written and full of useful information for anyone who takes their health seriously.I have studied Mitochondria for over 40 years and am always interested in new books and texts on the subject. This is easy reading for novices who are interested in how their cells and health work and contains a good glossary of terms. This is not a book to read in an hour though. There is a lot of REALLY GOOD data here for those who want to know

The key to everything
I am an desperate seeker/ patient & avid reader of this kind of book & even fo me its heavy going in places. I found myself having to re read chapters to make sure i fully understood. Lee Know does try to make several references & comparisons for us, which is kind but not much good if you've never seen Star Wars. He is definitely an amazing scientist. However, everything starts and end in the Mitochondria and if like me you have struggled with unexplainable symptoms for years this could give you insight. For a very long time I made the mistake of trying to heal my symptoms and got nowhere. You have to heal the cell, respect and nurture the Mitochondria and the symptoms will / should take care of you. As a result I am taking a different approach, too soon to tell but I feel it all makes more sense now.

That mitochondria needs lots of CoQ10.
I have AS. Ankylosing spondylitis an autoimmune disease. This book explains the importance of mitochondria health’s involvement in keeping the flares that are so common in AS sufferers.

Great insights for people interested in science!!
This book provides a lot of great insight on my favorite organelle and ties together a lot of biochemical pathways that other texts and articles do not connect. I am going to share some of the information that I learned in this book with my AP Biology students as it is relevant, and provides unique knowledge and perspective to topics that we all thought we knew a lot about. This is not designed for a lay person, but someone with a science background or someone who is curious in these topics as well as how to improve your health can be benefitted from this book.

For the Health Care Provider
Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine is a fairly complex read. It's not for a complete beginner, though the author simplifies the over-all concepts in the beginning as much as he can. I would recommend this book to health care professionals to further their already solid base of knowledge in nutrition, the Krebs Cycle and metabolic disorders such as Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, Obesity, etc. Lee Know knows his material and presents it as clearly and concisely as he can, which is quite good, all the while reminding the reader that discoveries are continuously being made, causing our understanding to change. But the foundational information and its current ramifications Know puts forward, is exciting, fascinating and hopeful. I give it 5 stars. It's a solid piece of excellent work.

Very useful and thought provoking
Useful for me. Well written and useful for the understanding of mitochondria and how the health of mitochondria impacts us.That said I would warn that a sophisticated understanding of the biological basics would likely be essential for understanding, because it a deep read.

May the Force be with you
I have me/cfs and am aware of the importance of mitochondria as the energy for cells and life so was interested in this book to help me gain a better understanding of the workings of the mitochondria as a main component of my illness is fatigue or lack of energy on this basis I purchased the book. As an avid fan of Starwars I found midi chlorians being equated to mitochondria and was immediately a fan of the book. So onto the content, I agree with other reviewers that you would benefit from prior knowledge of biology as it is quite heavy going but I would say persevere and finish the book. Towards the end there are useful points as to possible supplements to help your mitochondria perform better. I am glad I purchased this book and will reading it again and have no hesitation recommending it if you want to know a bit more than the basics.

Interesting but too technical, not a book for beginners.....
I’m interested in learning about this topic and really wanted to love this book.First good bit: I loved the writer’s passion for the subject and I found it infectious. He left me wanting to read more. The book went wrong for me in a couple of areas:Firstly, the technical detail. It was heavy going at times , more like an A level textbook than an introduction to the role of mitochondria in our cells. He missed a great opportunity to perhaps explain it in simpler, layman terms and this meant a lot of the detail went over my head. Some of his analogies helped, I could have done with more of those!I was also hoping he’d offer guidance on what supplements to take that may help slow the aging process. Yes he listed the supplements in detail ( and advised what benefits each has to offer) but I felt he offered us more of a menu, basically saying, “This is what’s available, you choose which ones you want”However, I can’t fault him for being thorough and I am now more interested than ever in the role that mitochondria play in our health. I will maybe read the book again and see if I can get more out of it on second reading.

Excellent
This is one of those books you can't stop reading (at least for me anyway, as I'm interested in the topic). Finished it in three days and still excited by the information I read and wanting to read more. Will probably need to re-read part 1, as it's a very technical section and went full throttle on you, but after finishing parts 2 and 3 I'm a little more prepped. I've now purchased a few supplements that were recommended by the book. Looking forward to testing them out and seeing if they optimise my energy levels :-)

THE CORE BASIS OF ALL DISEASE
It has been quite refreshing to go back in time to the core of the physiology that drives the human frame, which if understood could unlock the doors to great health and comfortable living through the ages.
