Does increase my stamina.
Started taking the raw powder form of maca from a local health store but after 2 months I switched to Nativas Gelatinized form because it is easier to digest & I LOVE it! Serving size is 1 teaspoon (verses 1 Tablespoon with the raw maca) i mix it with a cup of chocolate muscle milk or Atkins chocolate drink. Yummy, it just goes well with chocolate milk for some reason. It gives me a little lift without any caffeine. Seems to work better for me if i take a few days off, so i'm taking it 4-5 days a week now.

Exploring the New World of Maca
On the recommendation of several people in the vegan cooking/cookbook community, I purchased maca powder to add to dishes trying to emulate the cheesy sort of umami qualities found in some dairy products. So far I have used it in a recipe for vegan ricotta and although the effect is subtle, I believe it adds a je ne sais quoi quality, a roundness, warmness, and/or fullness of taste (find the ricotta recipe on my blog, What's the Muck).By itself, maca powder is very unusual upon first encounter. Advocates describe it as a"nutty, buttery" flavor, and I think it has that. But it also has a bit of a sharp, earthy fermentedness, as well as an unusual, slight sweetness, and even some acrid notes. It is the dried powder of a root, so that makes sense. Roots live in dirt. They store sugars, but dirt ain't an exactly a sterile environment, people. Nonetheless, I am delighted to have been so "brave" as to try this out- I think this has joined my arsenal of seasonings for good. This rendition of maca powder is "gelatinized", which is supposed to remove starch and render a "cleaner" tasting product, according to some. Never having had raw, dried maca powder, I can't speak to that, but both versions are rather pricey, and I opted for the more processed product in this case. I may try the regular dried version as well (which is only a couple of dollars cheaper per pound), and frankly, since I don't intend to eat this stuff from the jar, there may be very little difference between the two. I recommend all trying to get away from animal dairy products to explore the possibilities of this South American New World staple.

I feel better then I have in the last two years!
About two years ago I started getting tired frequently, grouchy, and was just drained most of the time. My hair started turning grey and I thought it was just the effects of aging or the beginnings of menopause, but I am still fairly young for that.I have been taking the Maca for about a week and I feel like my old self again. I have energy to do the things I need to do and no longer feel worn out or drained. I am not super grouchy, emotional, or snapping at people. My libido has returned and my skin even looks better. I have actually slept through the night without waking up in the past week (something I thought was no longer possible)! My hair is still greying ... :) but I feel like I did 2 years ago before that happened. I have also lost a little weight although that might be due to finally having enough energy to exercise.

Improved Energy But Hard to Drink
I read a large number of reviews on Amazon and on other sites before purchasing this particular product. It became clear I needed the Gelantinized version given my history of easy bloating and digestion problems and the raw version wasn't a good idea for me. I was attracted to this product for the potential of higher energy levels and balancing of various systems in my body, i.e. endocrine system. I have been using a heaping teaspoon every morning for over a week now and I am absolutely experiencing higher levels of energy. As for the other effects, I think its too early to know yet but I am hopeful. But here's the thing... it is absolutely and utterly disgusting. It smells horrible and tastes even worse. I am not one of those people who turns their nose up at supplements because of flavor or smell; I push through for the benefit and recognize natural products are not necessairly going to be pleasant. However, this one is giving me pause. I have tried using it in my morning BSN Syntha Vanilla protein shake (best protein powder ever, like melted ice cream), which is mixed with unsweetened flax or almond milk and frozen blueberries. This maca destroys the whole delicious shake and all I can taste is maca. I tried adding yogurt into it too, but again, only maca flavor. So here's my discovery if you want to to force this down your throat and get the benefits. I mixed it in about a cup of unsweetened almond milk with a good dose of real vanilla extract. The vanilla cuts the maca flavor dramatically (didn't work when vanilla was added in the protein maca shake though). A little cinnamon can help too. Bottomline - its a good product, I have high hopes for its effects, but you either have to acclimate to the flavor or get creative. Its worth it.
