Q: Would this sponge be big enough to fit on the intake of an aquaclear 70 filter?

No because the AquaClear 70 tube is wider and the intake slits are longer than the Aquaclear 20/50 tubes which I have used this filter for. Only draw back is that it is a little loose and closed on the bottom. I cut a tiny slit in the bottom and push that end up onto the intake tube. It then fits snuggly and is the perfect length. But what I DO like, and the reason I keep buying them, is because they are coarse and don't get clogged. I have snail only tanks and there is a ton of biofilm, so the finer filters clog too easily.

not really, but if your filter is too powerful or to close to the tank wall in may get caught.
