The USB cable is for power. There is not a fixed battery, however there is an option to use with xAAA batteries.

Can you remove the rows?

Not without damage. They are not meant to be removed. If you are looking for a flat backlit surface, look for a light box.

How many of each letter are supplied with the light box? What if I need 3 of the letter "S"?

My granddaughter (whom I bought it for)… said there are 4 of each letter.

Is there a timer function on this ? Will it turn off after a set time?

There is no timer function. It stays on until you physically turn it off.
