Q: Can the logan foamwerks straight cutter be used without the logan chanel rail? can it be used with just an aluminium ruler?

Yes,,,,,,,,but,,,,,,,professional results achieved with rail. Trust me. I started out using a this with an aluminum ruler and the ruler was too light and keep moving, resulting in uneven cuts. The rail has an anti-slip backing that prevents it from moving. GET THE RAIL.

Q: how thick of foam can it cut thru, I have some that is an inch thick?

Mine cuts up to 1/2" thick foam board. Model WC-6001

It very hard to try to explain how to use the Foamwerks cutter. So I included a link to a youtube video. If this link does not work, you can always go to www.youtube.com, and in the search, box start typing the name of your cutter. You will possibly see the following results, (foamwerks foamboard straight/bevel cutter). Click on the search results and select the straight cutter. Q: Can this be used to cut canvas rolls?

Yes the WC6001 FoamWerks Straight Cutter would cut canvas. But it would work best hooked onto the WC3001 Channel Rail. And make sure they use scrap foam board only under what they are cutting. The WC6001 is really designed to cut foam board but being it uses a razor blade, it should work fine on canvas also.
