The lenses are very (!) dark and can be used to view the Sun during the day. They should be safe for viewing a complete solar eclipse.

Shade 6 lenses are generally too light for arc welding, and too dark for gas cutting, so they're difficult to find.I use this lens (with a hood) for plasma cutting: it's dark enough that I don't get arc flash, but light enough that I can see what I'm doing before pulling the trigger (in a well-lit garage.)

The glass was everything I expected, too bad we had clouds hiding the sun and eclipse. The 4x5 sheet of glass covers all but the largest camera lenses, perfect for photographing the sun.
