the power tap switch works more tonally; it's described as single coil, humbucker and and a blend of the two sounds by Ibanez. the pups are always active though. hope that helps.

Does it play with out battery?

The answer is no. The pickups themselves are passive at all times and never use battery power. But they are hardwired to the EQ circuitry, which is active and therefore must have battery power to function. And since there’s no way to bypass or turn off the EQ, the only way to hear output from the pickups is to have a battery providing power to the EQ.
